The making of art is a profoundly natural and human activity. At best, the creation of art is the vehicle by which the artist, through the example of others and his own experience, will discover the threshold of his own mind. In this context it is my conviction that there exists a spirit of the artist. And it is the cultivation of this spirit that raises my consciousness and motivates my art.

This is not merely the aquisitition of useful techniques or the adoption of a style. Style alone becomes fashion and fashion is often ephemeral. Skills are synonymous with techniques; a technique is only a tool, and tools alone do not lead to understanding. Sometimes style and technique are codependent, but for me neither can be the subject. The subject has always been the self, and the self is inseparable from nature. Therefore, it is not only how or what I depict that is uniquely important, but also when, where and why.
